A.R.T at The Arc

The Arc of Putnam County’s Artistic Realization Technologies (ART) program allows people with the most severe physical challenges to create works of art with the use of “surrogate hands.”

All our artists are from the Medically Fragile Program and are wheelchair bound, with significant physical and intellectual disabilities. Arc staff member Al Parker provides the “surrogate hands” and serves as a tracker. Through the yes/no process, Al is directed by the artist in determining the size of the canvas, the exact color of each brushstroke, the size and shape of the brush and other tools used. Shapes are based on finding points, and even the mixture of colors is chosen by the artist.

Many of the works created by these artists have been featured in public showings and/or purchased by art lovers and collectors.
